BC Asbestos Regulations

As of January 1, 2024, WorkSafe BC has implemented new regulations regarding the handling and removal of asbestos in the construction and demolition industry. The regulations aim to minimize the risk of exposure to Asbestos and project everyone against exposure to this fibrous material.

These regulations ensure workers and the public’s safety and well-being when dealing with asbestos-containing materials.

The key aspects of the 2024 asbestos regulations include:

  • Stricter containment and disposal protocols
  • Mandatory air monitoring during asbestos removal activities
  • Enhanced record-keeping requirements.

These regulations aim to minimize the risk of asbestos exposure and ultimately protect the health of our employees and the community.

Classic Renovations understands the importance of compliance with these regulations.

Asbestos Fiber

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral. It was commonly used for much of the mid-century until 1990 as an electrical insulator, a fire-resistant material that could strengthen almost anything it was mixed with.

When disturbed it can become dangerous, as the asbestos fibers are very small and can be inhaled and lodged in the lining of the lungs. According to The Canadian Lung Association, it can take 20-30 years to fully manifest and to start showing symptoms in a person.

It is impossible to cure, and lung damage is permanent.

Where could I find Asbestos?

Asbestos was banned by the Canadian Government in 1991 from import, manufacture, sale, and use in Canada. However, there are still a number of Buildings and Homes that may have Asbestos-containing materials.

These can be hiding in various spots and typically would not be a health concern until the area is disturbed. If you are doing any renovations to an older building in areas like Insulated Areas, or Vinyl Floor titles make sure you have a professional review your building and confirm it is safe and in conjunction with Worksafe BC.

Below is a list of areas where Asbestos can be hiding:

  • Textured Paints
  • Pipe Insulation
  • Popcorn Ceilings
  • Roof tiles
  • Drywall
  • Vinyl floor tiles, wallpaper & sheet flooring

Asbestos Removal

Asbestos Removal is not something that you can do yourself. The team that removes these dangerous fibers needs to make sure that they have specific elements including:

  • The area is properly sealed off with polyethylene film
  • Have machines with HEPA Vacuum systems
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), being fully protected
  • Wetting Agents

Every asbestos removal job received a risk factor as low, moderate, or high based on the amount of asbestos in the material, and where the material is located.
